This year Oculus launched their first VR Headset called the Oculus Rift. It is $599 device that pretty much transports you anywhere and everywhere. Right now it is mainly a piece of gaming hardware, but it is also a way to experience new environments and change the way you interact with reality. But first of all, why would you want this thing? Well, the simple answer is, it is one of the coolest pieces of VR tech available in the market right now. For the price you are paying, you are essentially getting a surprisingly light and comfortable headset which weighs over a pound and feels evenly balanced on your head. It has dual 1280 x 1080 AMOLED displays, which throws images to both of your eyes with a 90Hz refresh rate. The device also includes an integrated headphones that let you experience 3D audio which isn’t just a phrase, to begin with. It is a revolutionary technology, and you will hear exactly where the noise is coming from. But not everything is so good about it. First of all, you are going to need a very powerful PC to run this thing. If you are planning to run this off of your MacBook Air, then you are not going to have any luck. So essentially, apart from the rift, the PC by itself is going to cost you about a $1000. The company is also pairing an Oculus controllers to go with them so that you can use it. These controllers are two separate pieces of hardware for each hand you will be able to use them as you would be moving your hands in real life.
But at the time of the launch of the VR headset, the controller is not yet available, and all you are left with is an Xbox controller. So mostly this is gaming as of now, more than anything else. At the time of the launch, there are two games which you can play, and more games are obviously on their way. The immersion is great, and you will completely forget about the outside world. When you compare it with another smartphone virtual reality like the GearVR, they only let you look from a fixed point. But with the Oculus Rift, you can actually move through space using positional tracking. For instance, while playing a game, you can move closer to an object or maybe an enemy and initiate a kill, etc. But with that said, if you are yet to experience VR, then GearVR is probably your best bet since it is more affordable. Because making a commitment to a $599 hardware along with a $1000 PC is not everyone’s cup of tea. But you also need to take into consideration that Rift is not made for everyone. And above all, it is a first generation product. It is kind of huge in size, and the cords can get in your way while playing as well. So overall, there are a lot of reasons why you should not be the first one to buy this as of now, but then if you can get your hands on one and give it a try then do give it a shot. If you do that, then you will realize that it is a step in the right direction towards the future and we are only seeing the beginning of it.
