Apple just released the iOS 6.1 version update for the various iOS devices, but as always it isn’t possible for everyone to jailbreak this version as its possible for the pre-A5 chip devices such as the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS and the 4th gen iPod Touch. This is possible through the Redsn0w tool, and the users need to have the official iOS 6 IPSW file for the jailbreak to happen, and the jailbreak that is possible is a tethered one.
What is a tethered jailbreak? This is similar to the normal jailbreak where all the 3rd party apps and functions are possible to run, but whenever the device is starting up you need to have it connected to the computer and have the Redsn0w turned on.
Following is the tutorial explaining how one can Jailbreak the iOS 6.1 version:
- iOS 6.1 IPSW file for your device, i.e. iPod Touch 4th Gen, iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS
- iOS 6.0 IPSW file for your device
- Redsn0w 0.9.15b3 version for Windows – Click here
- Redsn0w 0.9.15b3 version for Mac – Click here
- Your iOS device and the 30-pin connector for the computer
IPSW files for iOS 6.0 for the compatible devices:
The iOS 6.0 version IPSW file too is required because the Resn0w tool which we are using here isn’t compatible to use with the iOS 6.1 version as of now, and so the official version which can be used is the iOS 6.0.
Once you have all the stuff ready, you need to unzip the Redsn0w file and open redsn0w.exe file for the jailbreak to start. Once the redsn0w starts, you would see two options – Jailbreak and Extras.
Click on “Extras” and then in that, you need to select “Select IPSW” to manually specify the IPSW file, and through that you need to select the iOS file of the iOS 6.0 as we mentioned above, that this redsn0w version is compatible to work with the iOS 6.0
Once the file is selected, you would get the notification through the pop-up that this particular IPSW will be used for the further steps in the jailbreaking process.
Now, go back to the main screen and then hit Jailbreak and you would be taken to the screen to enter the DFU Mode in your device. For that, you will have to keep your iOS device switched off and connected to the computer and then follow the instructions to enter the device into DFU mode.
You get a notification through a pop-up that this is a tethered jailbreak so if at all you are trying to reboot your iOS device like the iPod touch, iPhone 4 and the 3GS you need to go to Extras and hit “Just Boot” in the redsn0w tool. One would usually not shut down his device, but if at all that happens due to the complete drain of the battery, the boot up is possible only through the redsn0w tool.
As said by the dev team, the fully untethered jailbreak for the iOS 6.1 will be out soon, and we would post a tutorial as soon as it is out.
Warning: Do not try to jailbreak your iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch 5th gen as these cannot be jailbroken using this tool and guide. Do check the list above to see which all devices are compatible.
