If you don’t know what a dropcam is, it is a Wi-Fi video monitoring device for home, baby, pets, and businesses. And from what people have been talking, it seems to have revolutionized the security for home and businesses. The ever so connected world that we live today, this device enables you to monitor your house and always have a piece of mind. So giving you a glance of the key features it has cloud video recording, mobile and web apps, secure streaming and web alerts, etc. It also has night vision and two-way audio. It also has two times the sharper video with pro optics and sensors at 3MP and 130-degree view field of range. Now taking a look at some tech specs, it features color with digital zoom upto eight times, H.264 encoding and upto 1080p video at 30 FPS. It also has an impressive 180 FOV diagonally along with a speaker and microphone and not to forget the infrared sensor for the night vision.
Now taking a look at the drop cam itself, it is actually a very small unit capsule which is mounted into a metal enclosure. You can also wall mount this, and in general, it is indeed a very versatile unit. You also get a handy ten ft micro USB cable as well as a wall adapter along with a few screws in case if you decide to wall mount this little guy. The fact that it uses micro USB and is powered by a standard two amps adapter makes it very easy to use. But i got to say that the dropcam unit itself feels pretty sleek. It is a just small lens in a round body, and as mentioned, it has a micro-USB port built into it. It is indeed quite impressive to think that this small capsule which weighs 160g houses everything like the camera element, infrared sensors and what not. And for setting up, all you have to do is download the dropcam app and set up the new camera. Once you have it plugged in, it should instantly recognize it is connected to a network, and you are good to go.
The FOV is actually very wide. It is much wider than you would think it would be. With the paid cloud storage option, you also get the ability to look back the stored footage. You can also use this to stream publicly for a long period. On the actual settings for the camera, you have options for HD video, night vision which is set to auto, mic settings, etc. With the two-way audio, you are able to talk to somebody in that room, and it is always a good thing to have. So overall, you will not run into any problems whatsoever. It works perfectly, and the setup was smooth as well. But perhaps the only disadvantage is the price for all the features with the cloud storage. So many people will not be able to take the full advantage because of this.
